Army Colonel, Retired
Tom Umberg is a retired U.S. Army Colonel. He began his military service at the Korean DMZ and served three overseas tours. Umberg was recalled to active military duty in 2009-10 to lead the U.S. military effort to attack corruption within the Afghan Army and Police, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone.
In the State Senate, Umberg will advocate for our veterans and their families, ensuring they have the benefits they’ve earned for assistance with jobs, housing, education and healthcare.
Federal Prosecutor
As a federal criminal prosecutor, Tom Umberg had a 100% conviction rate, trying numerous white collar, civil rights and gang cases. He successfully tried over 100 cases to verdict or judgment, including complex matters involving healthcare, workplace harassment, and protection of employee pension plans.
Umberg will continue working to keep our communities safe while also protecting the rights of workers, immigrants and women who deserve to be free from harassment and intimidation.
Deputy Drug Czar in Clinton White House
Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Tom Umberg served as Deputy Drug Czar, where he was responsible for foreign drug interdiction, counter-drug intelligence and international drug policy.
Umberg has a deep understanding of the strategies and resources we need to stop the current opioid epidemic and to put an end to senseless gun violence in our communities.
State Legislator
Serving three terms in the State Assembly, Umberg represented central Orange County. He authored 76 new state laws and brought more than $563 million in state and federal grant funds to Orange County.
Tom Umberg will work to diversify our local economy, bringing high wage jobs to Orange County and providing affordable housing for families.
Protecting the Affordable Care Act will be one of Umberg’s top priorities – along with finding ways to expand access to healthcare for everyone in California.
Small Business Owner
Tom Umberg founded and built a successful veteran-owned small business in Orange County, recognized as one of California’s preeminent boutique law firms by “Best Lawyers” and “The Daily Journal.”
Tom Umberg knows what it means to run a business and meet a payroll. He will be a strong advocate for local small businesses, cutting red tape and unnecessary regulation.
Family
Tom and Robin Umberg have been married for 36 years with three grown children and one granddaughter. Robin Umberg is a Brigadier General (Retired) who served as an Army nurse and hospital administrator, as well as Undersecretary of California’s Department of Veterans Affairs.
